Der Mauerbau ändert die Situation an der Charité. War sie nach dem Ende des Krieges zunächst ein Ort der bürgerlichen Eliten, die in Anpassung und Opportunismus geübt waren. Aus den Göttern in Weiß werden nicht über Nacht Götter in Rot. Medizinische Koryphäen, die eine kurze Phase der Entnazifizierung überstanden haben, bleiben oft in ihren alten Positionen. Diese Kontinuität beherrscht das Klima im Vorzeigekrankenhaus der noch jungen DDR. Der geerbte Ruhm des Hauses wirkt weiter. Der österreichische Forensiker Otto Prokop wechselt von der Universität Bonn an die Charité und übernimmt dort die Gerichtsmedizin. Er bleibt ein Pendler zwischen den Welten und wird international bekannt als "Blutgruppenpapst". Andere, wie der Biochemiker Mitja Rapoport und die Kinderärztin Ingeborg Rapoport, entscheiden sich bewusst für das sozialistische Land. Zweimal wurden sie vertrieben: zuerst durch die Nazis, weil sie Juden waren. Später mussten sie die USA in der McCarthy-Ära verlassen, weil sie als Kommunisten verfolgt wurden. An der Charité werden sie bleiben. Die DDR ist für sie die vermeintliche Alternative zu dem Deutschland, das Faschismus und Rassenverfolgung hervorgebracht hat. (Text: ARD)

At the beginning of 1933, the Charité is a model for doctors from all over Europe, a mecca for patients from all over the world. When the Nazis take power, the world-famous surgeon Ferdinand Sauerbruch calls on the young doctors to "accomplish the necessary new". The national-conservative attitude was the basic consensus in the medical profession. Like most doctors of the Charité, he welcomes the new regime. Only 12 years later he operates day and night war wounded in the narrow bunker under his clinic, while above him, in the ruins of the Charité, fights are carried out building to building. But in those 12 years, something terrible has happened: Doctors, who have come by profession and vocation to save lives, have become leaders and performers of Nazi racial laws; Accomplices and patrons of a criminal medicine. None of the internationally respected professors such as Ferdinand Sauerbruch, Walter Stoeckel or Georg Bessau became members of the NSDAP. But they become the figureheads of National Socialism. On all occasions, the Nazi conspirators decorated themselves with their doctors. Of the 20 physicians who were indicted in the Nuremberg Doctors' Proceedings after the war, seven were university doctors from Berlin, including doctors from the Charité. How enmeshed are the researchers or reviewers - the physicians who, in their old positions, fulfill new functions in National Socialist health policy? The film goes in search of clues to the scenes of dramatic events. Ein Ort der täglichen Duelle um Leben und Tod, aber auch um Einfluss und Macht. Der Glanz der Spitzenleistungen der Mediziner spiegelt auf die jeweils Herrschenden zurück, demonstriert ihr Potenzial. Im Gegenzug vergeben sie Privilegien und Ämter. Erfolgreiche Ärzte können zu Stars werden. Der Mythos der „Halbgötter in Weiß“ ist untrennbar verbunden mit dem der Charité. Auf dem Areal nahe der Spree, in dichter Nachbarschaft zum Schloss, zum Reichstag, zur Reichskanzlei und zum Führerbunker, aber auch zum Staatsrat der DDR und nun zum Kanzleramt, verlief die Entwicklung in mehr als 300 Jahren nie geradlinig, sondern auf Umwegen und mit Wendungen. Die Charité ist Schaffensort so genialer Ärzte und Wissenschaftler wie Rudolf Virchow, Robert Koch oder Emil von Behring; ist weltberühmter Ort der Sternstunden der Medizin des 19. Jahrhunderts, aber auch ein Ort tödlicher Irrtümer und sogar Schuld und Verstrickung. Die Dokumentation begibt sich auf Spurensuche an den Orten, an denen in der Vergangenheit medizinhistorisch Unvergleichliches geschah und führt in Rudolf Virchows einmalige Sammlung anatomisch-pathologischer Präparate und ins unscheinbare Arbeitszimmer im Reichsgesundheitsamt gegenüber der Charité. Hier entdeckte Robert Koch den Tuberkulose-Erreger. Im ehrwürdigen Anatomischen Institut war es Frauen lange Zeit verboten, Leichen zu präparieren. In der ehemaligen chirurgischen Universitätsklinik in der Ziegelstraße vollbrachte Ernst von Bergmann chirurgische „Wunder“ und wurde zum Schrittmacher der medizinischen Entwicklung im 19. Jahrhundert. In der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus befand sich hier eine NS-Kaderschmiede.
