On his birthday, Thom Payne gets the gift of insignificance and also a new boss. He suspects his ED pills are interfering with his anti-depressants, leaving him with neither happiness nor... happiness. The original Happyish pilot, filmed in 2013, wrapped just weeks before Philip Seymour Hoffman's death on February 2, 2014, at age 46. Directed by Ken Kwapis, the script closely matches what eventually aired, centering on a depressed middle-aged ad exec who begins to fear lasting happiness is out of reach after getting a younger new boss. Kathryn Hahn reprised her role as Lee Payne, but several roles were recast—Ellen Barkin replaced Parker Posey as the headhunter, and Bradley Whitford stepped in for Rhys Ifans as the boss.
